Fault Finding and Repairs for Damaged NBN-Related Cabling

A damaged cable can leave your internet slow, unstable or completely disconnected. The fault may involve internal data cabling, the connection between NBN equipment and your router, or another cable within the property.

Comms Cabling Central Coast provides NBN cable fault finding and customer-side cabling repairs for homes and businesses across the Central Coast. We inspect the affected setup, identify where the problem is located and explain whether the cable can be repaired or needs replacing.

If testing shows that the damaged section is owned by NBN or another telecommunications carrier, the repair must be arranged through the appropriate provider. We will clearly explain when this applies.

Signs Your NBN Cabling May Be Damaged

Cable damage is not always visible. A cable may be crushed inside a wall, pulled loose or deteriorated along an older pathway. Other faults follow renovation or landscaping work.

Your cabling may need to be inspected if:

  • The connection stopped after a cable or NBN device was moved
  • Internet dropouts began after building or renovation work
  • A cable is visibly cut, crushed, kinked or chewed
  • A wall socket or wired device no longer connects
  • The service works intermittently when a cable is moved
  • Your modem or router has power but no usable connection
  • Only part of the internal network has stopped working
  • Your provider has not identified an external network outage

These symptoms can also have other causes, so testing should be completed before a cable is repaired or replaced.

What Types of NBN Cabling Can Develop Faults?

NBN connections use different technologies. Fibre to the Premises uses fibre, while other connection types may use copper or coaxial cabling before the service reaches the equipment inside the property. Ethernet or other data cabling then connects the NBN equipment, router and devices.

Identifying the cable type and network boundary determines who is authorised to complete the repair.

Our NBN Cable Repair Services

Cable Testing and Fault Location

We inspect the affected cables, sockets and equipment connections to determine whether the fault is within customer-side cabling or the incoming NBN service. Locating it first can avoid replacing a full run when the problem is limited to one connection or short section.

Customer-Side Cable Repairs and Replacement

Where the damaged cable falls within the customer side of the network, we can assess whether a compliant repair is suitable. Replacement may be recommended when a cable is extensively damaged, deteriorated or no longer appropriate for the network requirements.

The repaired or replacement cable is checked before the work is completed to confirm that the internal connection is operating correctly.

Fibre Optic Cabling

Fibre is sensitive to crushing, sharp bends and physical impacts. Our fibre optic cabling experience allows us to inspect fibre-related faults and determine the next step. Repairs to NBN-owned fibre must go through your provider or an authorised NBN channel.

Cabling Between NBN Equipment and Your Router

The Ethernet connection between the NBN connection box and router can also fail. A damaged patch lead, faulty wall point or problem in the internal cable route may interrupt the service even when the NBN equipment is operating.

We can test and replace customer-owned cabling, install a suitable data point and improve the internal route where required.

Damaged Underground Cable Pathways

If a conduit within the property is blocked, collapsed or damaged, a new pathway may be required. Our lead-in cable installation service includes route planning, excavation, trenching and underground conduit installation.

How NBN Cable Repairs Are Assessed

1

Identify the affected connection

We establish when the fault began and which equipment or areas are affected.

2

Inspect and test the cabling

Accessible cables, wall points and equipment connections are checked to locate the likely fault.

3

Confirm responsibility

We explain whether the damaged section is customer-side cabling or must be handled by the provider or NBN.

4

Repair or replace

Where the work is within our scope, we complete the agreed repair or replacement and check the connection.

Should the Cable Be Repaired or Replaced?

A localised repair may be possible when damage is confined to an accessible section. Replacement may be better when the cable is crushed along its route, damaged in several places or deteriorated. We consider the cable type, fault location, accessibility and pathway condition before recommending the work.

Who Repairs NBN-Owned Cables and Equipment?

Registered cablers can work on customer-side telecommunications cabling, but not unauthorised cabling or equipment owned by NBN or another carrier. If the fault involves NBN infrastructure, contact your internet provider so it can be escalated through the correct process. We can assess the property-side setup and clarify whether the repair falls within our scope.
