What Is a Lead-In Cable?

A lead-in cable connects a property to the telecommunications network at the property boundary. Depending on the property and network arrangement, it may run underground through a conduit or overhead from a nearby pole.

For an underground connection, the cable is protected inside a dedicated telecommunications conduit extending from near the property boundary to the external connection point on the building. The internal network then continues from this point to the required sockets, modem location or communications equipment.

The route and installation requirements depend on the property layout, existing infrastructure and connection type.

When Is a New Lead-In Cable Needed?

Lead-in work may be required when:

Building a new home or commercial premises
Connecting a secondary dwelling or newly developed property

Excavation and Trenching for Underground Conduit Installation

Comms Cabling Central Coast provides excavation and trenching for underground conduit installation within the property. This creates a protected pathway between the property entry area and the external telecommunications point on the building.

The route, depth, conduit and separation from other services must suit the site and applicable requirements. Driveways and other load-bearing surfaces may require different preparation from soft-ground areas. Work beyond the property boundary must be completed or authorised by the relevant network provider.

Underground Lead-In Conduit and Cabling

Once the trench is prepared, we install the telecommunications conduit along the planned route to protect the cable. The lead-in can then be installed or prepared for connection, depending on the network boundary and authorised project scope. We will explain whether your provider or NBN needs to arrange the final network connection.

Aerial Lead-In Cabling

Some properties use an overhead lead-in rather than an underground pathway. We can assess which option suits the site, although work involving carrier-owned poles or network infrastructure must go through the relevant authorised provider.

Cabling From the External Connection Point

We can also install data cabling from the external connection point to a modem position, data point, communications cabinet or main distribution frame, subject to the connection type and network boundary.

Who Is Responsible for the Lead-In Connection?

Responsibility depends on where the work is located and who owns the relevant infrastructure. Property owners may need to arrange a compliant pathway or customer-side cabling within their boundary. Work on the public network, in the road reserve or on carrier-owned equipment generally needs to be arranged through the internet provider or network operator.
