Move Your Internet Equipment to a More Practical Location

An NBN connection box or modem installed in the wrong location can be difficult to access, interfere with renovations or leave parts of the property with weak Wi-Fi. Moving the equipment may improve how the space is used and allow the internal network to be arranged more effectively.

Comms Cabling Central Coast relocates NBN boxes and modems for homes and businesses across the Central Coast. We plan the position, install required cabling and test the approved relocation work.

The requirements depend on which item is being moved and the NBN technology at the property. We will explain what can be relocated by a registered cabler and when your internet provider or NBN needs to become involved.

Why Relocate Your NBN Box or Modem?

An equipment location that worked when the property was connected may no longer suit its layout, renovations or Wi-Fi use.

A relocation may be worth considering when:

  • The NBN box is in a bedroom, cupboard or other inconvenient area
  • The equipment will be affected by renovation or demolition work
  • Your modem is too far from the areas where Wi-Fi is used
  • The current location is difficult to access for testing or maintenance
  • Cables are exposed to pets, furniture or accidental damage
  • You are creating a home office or changing a business layout
  • The modem needs to be closer to existing data cabling or network equipment
  • The equipment is in an area with unsuitable ventilation, moisture or dust

The new position should be selected for access, protection and network performance rather than appearance alone.

NBN Box Relocation and Modem Relocation Are Different

The NBN connection box, sometimes called the NTD, is NBN-supplied equipment. A modem or Wi-Fi router generally comes from your provider or is purchased separately.

Moving a modem may only require new data cabling. Relocating a fixed NBN box can involve NBN equipment or cabling and must follow the applicable Authority to Alter requirements.

Our NBN Box and Modem Relocation Services

Site Assessment and Position Planning

We assess the equipment, cable pathway and reason for moving it. The proposed location is considered in relation to power, ventilation, access, Wi-Fi coverage and connected devices.

Modem and Router Relocation

Your modem does not always need to sit beside the NBN box. Data cabling can connect the two while allowing the modem to sit closer to the areas where internet access is needed. We can install the cable route and suitable data point.

NBN Connection Box Relocation

Registered cablers can relocate some internal NBN equipment when the work is covered by NBN’s Authority to Alter requirements. We assess whether the proposed change falls within our scope. External equipment, Fixed Wireless and satellite installations generally require a different process through the provider or NBN.

New Fibre or Data Cable Pathways

Moving equipment may require a new route through a wall, ceiling, floor or surface-mounted pathway. We plan it to protect the cable and maintain suitable separation from other services. Our fibre optic cabling experience allows the pathway to suit the connection type.

Repairs During Relocation

Existing cables may be found damaged, crushed or unsuitable once equipment is moved. We can assess customer-side faults and complete NBN cable repairs within our authorised scope. NBN-owned cable faults must follow the appropriate provider or network process.

Our Equipment Relocation Process

1

Review the setup

We identify the NBN technology, equipment, cable route and problems with the current location.

2

Confirm the position

The new location is checked for access, power, ventilation and cabling requirements.

3

Prepare the pathway

New fibre or data cabling is installed where required.

4

Relocate and test

The approved equipment is repositioned, reconnected and tested.

Choosing the Best New Location

Before relocating equipment, the proposed position should account for:

  • Power: The NBN box and modem may each require a nearby outlet.
  • Ventilation: Equipment should not be enclosed where heat builds up.
  • Access: Indicator lights, ports and connections should remain accessible.
  • Cable protection: Fibre and data cables need protection from damage.
  • Wi-Fi coverage: The router should support the main areas.
  • Future needs: Allow for offices, entertainment equipment or additional workstations.

Where the ideal NBN box position is not the ideal Wi-Fi position, data cabling can allow the modem to be placed elsewhere.

Can Every NBN Box Be Relocated by a Registered Cabler?

No. Registered cablers can often relocate internal equipment associated with FTTP, FTTN, FTTC and HFC when the work complies with NBN’s Authority to Alter requirements and the cabler holds the required competencies. External equipment, Fixed Wireless and satellite relocations need to be arranged through the appropriate provider or NBN channel.

We assess the equipment before confirming the scope. For renovations, this should occur before walls, cabinetry or finishes are completed so the cable pathway can be incorporated into the project.
